Eric Church’s musical career

Eric Church (born Kenneth Eric Church on May1977) has been playing guitar and writing songs since the age of 13. The North Carolina native might be best known for his country music, but he began his musical journey by jamming covers of Jimmy Buffett songs at local bars and cafes.

Back then, Church was the front-man of the band “Mountain Boys,” composed of fellow college friends and even his brother.

After graduating from college and with his father’s support, Eric headed to Nashville to pursue a singing-songwriting career.

His first break came in the form of a partnership, with Eric co-writing songs for Terri Clark and Dean Miller while working with different producers on his own records. Still, it wasn’t until he caught the eye of producer Jay Joyce that big names like Capitol Nashville started paying attention.

By 2005, Capitol Nashville had offered Church a contract and helped him release his first single, “How ‘Bout You.” The song reached position #14 on the Hot Country Songs chart and launched Church’s musical career.

Church’s first album, “Sinners Like Me” also produced three other chart-topping singles: “Two Pink Lines,” “Guys Like Me” and “Lighting.”

Thanks to the success of those singles, Eric Church didn’t tour but did go on to perform his first Grand Ole Opry concert in April 2006.

Before releasing his second album (“Carolina”) in 2009, Church also released a single called “His Kind of Money (My Kind of Love)” in 2008. The song made it into Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and was eventually added as a bonus track only to albums sold through Best Buy.

Church followed that second album with a 2011 special four-song EP called “Caldwell County” before releasing his next album (“Chief”) later the same year.

“Chief” received critical acclaim and was nominated for the 2012 Grammy Awards for Best Country Album. One of the singles from that album (“Drink in My Hand”) also became a No. 1 single.

Church’s first live album (“Caught in the Act”) was released in 2012 and features performances recorded at the Tivoli Theatre in Tennessee. Soon after, Church’s album Chief was named Album of The Year at the CMA Awards.

“The Outsiders,” Church’s most recent album, was released in February 2014. The second single from that album (“Give Me Back My Hometown”) became #1 on the Country Airplay chart and was followed by other single releases that were also very well received.

Church’s musical style has been described as a blend of outlaw country and southern rock. And although comparisons to Hank Williams Jr. and Kris Kristofferson are not necessarily erroneous, Church says he’s been equally influenced by heavy metal and country rock.
