One Direction’s Music history
One direction are Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson. The boys are all English, apart from Niall Horan who is Irish. They began life as a band in 2010 after making it to the final of the X-Factor’s seventh UK series. Initially they had auditioned as solo acts, not having known one another before the show, but the judges had decided to put them together as a group, which proved to be a clever decision!
One Direction have toured every year since coming third on the English series the X-Factor. Proud collectors of four Brit Awards, and four MTV Awards, they have come to achieve great success which also includes (aside from multiple awards) albums, books, films, merchandise, and what might seem like endless sell-out concerts and TV and public appearances.
Their debut single which they released in September 2011, What Makes You Beautiful, made history as the most pre-ordered Sony Music Entertainment UK single, after it reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. Having previously been signed to Simon Cowell’s own record label Syco, in November 2011 the boys signed up with Columbia Records in North America. In December 2011, One Direction then commenced their very own headlining concert tour, the ‘Up All Night Tour’. Subsequently, in the following March 2012, their renowned album, Up All Night, entered the Billboard 200 pop album chart at number one, which is a first for any UK band! This was thanks to selling an astounding 176,000 copies in the first week of going it on sale.
In November 2012 One Direction’s second studio album, Take Me Home, was released, followed by a Comic Relief charity record in February 2013 – this was cover versions of the well-known songs One way or Another, and Teenage Kicks. One Direction as a band have had much charity involvement, and have visited Ghana as part of that Comic Relief appeal too.
By February 2013, the Official Charts Company revealed that One Direction had sold 2,425,000 records in the UK. This was just before the band embarked on their second concert tour, the Take Me Home Tour, which consisted of one hundred shows performed throughout Europe, North America and Australasia. Critic gave rave reviews about the boy’s singing and performing abilities, and the whole tour was announced to be a great success.
In April 2014 it was announced that 1D were going to play in stadiums, and was the very first time such a One Direction tour had been conceived. It was called was the Where We Are Tour, which saw them make donations of £200,000 from the ticket sales to the Stand Up to Cancer charity. At the end of 2014 their forth studio album, titled Four, was released.
